Here’s a collection of photos of the Great Spotted Woodpeckers that frequently visit my feeder. They were extremely shy at first but have now become so much more confiding. Their favourite food is the same kind of peanut that I put out for the tits unlike the Middle Spotted which only prefers to eat a different kind of bird food with mixed grains and seeds.
Here’s the male which now visits the feeder much more often than the female. It has small red patch on the nape.
Puffing up its crown feather a bit when slightly disturbed.
Feeding on peanuts that I put on the ground for them.
Here’s a video of the same male bird while feeding on the ground and its usual hide-and-seek habit.
Here’s the female which looks slightly scruffier than the male, especially on the mantle and flight feathers.
Today, we had the first snow in a long time. Even though it wasn’t much but at least a temperature drop of few degrees should make the feeders busier. Let’s see what it’ll be like in the morning.
